FA Vase First Round Proper

Plymouth Parkway 4   St Blazey 2   ( aet )

PARKWAY ended a run of 24 games without a victory over the Green and Blacks in a pulsating cup tie at Bolitho Park.

Former Argyle apprentice Chris Reski put Blazey ahead on 23 minutes with a superb volley from the edge of the area before Parkway replied when Matt Cusack was fouled, with John Morris scoring from the resultant free-kick.

Parkway were reduced to 10 men when Somerset referee Alan Smith, who had a poor game, brandished a straight red for Craig Holman's 39th-minute challenge.

Blazey went back in front on 53 minutes when Jay Isbell headed home and they were looking good for a place in the second round when Dave Trott's terrible pass was fired into the goal by Parkway substitute Ryan Honey.

The action did not end their as referee Smith balanced the books with an another dismissal – this time it was Blazey's former Crewe professional Ben Rix who went off.

Parkway found the extra energy in overtime, with Cusack's lob and a fine finish from substitute Karl Curtis in the 93rd and 95th minutes sending Parkway into today's second round draw.

Plymouth Parkway 2     Ivybridge Town  2

PARKWAY will have left Erme Valley happy with a point despite having taken an early two-goal lead against an Ivybridge side who remain top of the Premier Division.

The Bolitho Park club dominated the early stages, opening the scoring in the 25th minute when Matt Cusack worked his way through the heart of the Ivybridge defence before slotting home.

The lead was doubled 10 minutes later when Craig Holman took advantage of slack marking to rifle home from six yards.

The Bridgers responded well to reduce the deficit five minutes before half-time when Joe Truelove's deflected shot left Parkway goalkeeper Ben Elphick wrong-footed as it flew into the net.

The second half saw Ivybridge turn the game on its head as they dominated proceedings and the visitors were thankful to Elphick making several excellent saves. But the Parkway custodian could do nothing to prevent Truro loanee Stewart Yetton's 65th minute shot levelling the scores.

The league leaders almost snatched an 85th minute winner but substitute Jamie Middleton's goalbound header was brilliantly kept out, at full stretch, by Elphick.

Plymouth Parkway 1     Swanage and Herston 1

THE Peninsula League did not have the best of days in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase as only seven of their 16 participants are through to today's first round proper draw and one of them has to take part in a replay tomorrow.

Plymouth Parkway found themselves a goal down away at Swanage Town and Herston, this after Aaron Corby gave the Dorset Premier League side the lead from the penalty spot.

The game was deep into stoppage time when Johnny Morris rose above the home defence to head powerfully into the top corner of the goal to send the tie back to Bolitho Park.

Plymouth Parkway 0     Buckland Athletic 2

An inability to turn their second-half pressure and chances into goals cost Parkway the ultimate price in this Friday night encounter at Bolitho Park.

Buckland had completely run the first half, but even then had a huge slice of luck with their 26th minute goal.

Goalkeeper Ben Elphick came for a cross into his six yard box but the ball hit Parkway central defender Craig Holman on the chest to fly past his keeper and was already over the line when John Rimmer made certain.

The second-half belonged to the hosts in terms of possession and a succession of chances that went begging.

But it was Buckland who scored again on 54 minutes when a superb Antony Lynch pass found Shane Gill coming in to fire past Elphick.

Plymouth Parkway...3    Falmouth Town...1

DAVE LEONARD made changes after last weekend's poor display at St Blazey for this game at Bolitho Park and the Parkway boss must have been well satisfied with the results by the end of the game.

His side controlled most of the game with Paul Baker firing just over the bar on six minutes with Gavin Cockman and Aaron Cusack both going close twice before the home side finally opened their account on 34 minutes..

Neal Kinsman's tackle, and subsequent pass, found Jon Morris pulling the ball back from the bye-line for the impressive Baker to shoot home from six yards.

Matt Cusack had been denied by Bryan Scoffin as the second half carried on in the same vein before his pass released Baker who rounded the Falmouth 'keeper before unselfishly sliding the ball to Jon Morris who had an empty net in which to score.

A third goal followed when substitute Ross Saint raced clear only for Scoffin, who received a straight red, for clearly taking him out. Morris cooly slotted his penalty past defender Tom Smith who had taken over in goal.

It was no more than a consolation for the visitors when Nigel Thwaites headed home five minutes from time.

Plymouth Parkway...0 St Blazey 3

" I was more disappointed with the way we played than how good St Blazey were," said Parkway manager Dave Leonard after this defeat.

" Basically they had one player, who was able to hurt us and Chris Reski was outstanding on the day."

St Blazey took a 26th minute lead with Dave Trott's fierce 20 yard drive and a minute later former Argyle apprentice Reski had cut in from the left to fire home their second

Reski who was at Truro with Leonard, completed a fine individual performance by completing the scoring on 68 minutes.

Plymouth Parkway 0 Saltash United 1

A crowd of close to 400, comfortably the highest of the season so far, were at Bolitho Park to watch Saltash United win 1-0 over Plymouth Parkway. In a tight game the visitors had the best of the play but had to take advantage of one of two penalty kicks they were awarded to claim the win. March thorne netted from a 17th minute spot kick following a handball by Ross Saint and they missed a late chance to double their lead when another penalty was awarded, this time for a foul by Josh Fenwick which gave Ryan Honey the chance to score but his kick hit the post before being cleared.

Plymouth Parkway...3 Penzance...3

PENZANCE'S first step-six game at Penlee Park proved to be a thriller for a good-size crowd as they drew 3-3 with Plymouth Parkway in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division.

The Magpies were twice in the lead but found Parkway's prolific goalscorer Andy Sargent in predatory form as he notched his second hat-trick in three league games this season.

Jonny Ludlam fired Penzance into a 15th-minute lead, but Sargent lobbed the ball home from 25 yards to level the scores ten minutes before the break.

Paul Baker went close to giving the visitors the lead, but his drive came back off the crossbar before Sargent made the most of a defensive mix-up to score his second on 65 minutes.

The home side hit back with two goals in a three-minute spell with Ludlam cutting inside to power home a fine right-foot shot on 75 minutes.

Mark Vercesi's shot was parried by Parkway 'keeper Ben Elphick for Sam Cooper to snap up the rebound to restore Penzance's lead.

There were just six minutes left on the clock when Sargent completed his hat-trick with a crisp side-foot volley from a Craig Holman cross.

"Having led 2-1 and then find ourselves 3-2 down with just six minutes to go, the character and the desire of this team shone through as they gained a point from a difficult place to come," said Parkway boss Dave Leonard.

Plymouth Parkway...4 Launceston...1

A FIVE minute hat-trick from striker Andy Sargent was instrumental in Parkway maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season with their second consecutive 4-1 victory.

It was Launceston who took a 10th-minute lead when Sam Davey's shot squirmed into Ben Elphick's goal, but the Bolitho Park outfit were level before the break when Josh Fenwick scored with a fine header from 12 yards.

Parkway had the game won by the 55th minute after Sargent had struck his quickfire hat-trick, starting with a close range shot from a Gavin Cockram pull-back.

Craig Holman provided the cross for Sargent to score his second, with Neal Kinsman finding the Parkway striker 12 yards from goal to fire past Paul Hider and complete the scoring.

Torpoint Ath...1 Plymouth Parkway...4

PARKWAY followed up their Charity Vase victory over league champions Bodmin Town with success in their opening fixture of the new season.  A healthy crowd of 233 – Torpoint's biggest for a league game since joining the Peninsula – witnessed a well contested encounter at The Mill with both sides creating, and missing, chances.  Parkway always looked the more likely to score in the first half, although both sides created plenty of chances, and it was them who made the breakthrough on 12 minutes when Gavin Cockman made room on the right flank before firing across a great ball for Matt Cusack to arrive at the near post and send a fierce volley low inside Martin Piper's upright.  That, incredibly was the only goal of the first period, but Parkway required just a minute of the second to double their lead as Paul

It would have been easy for Torpoint to fold at this point but they showed their spirit by enjoying their best spell of the game with young Liam Thornton causing the visiting defence problems. It was fitting that it was Thornton who raced into the Parkway area to confidently slot the ball past Ben Elphick to set up an interesting last 15 minutes.

Torpoint's insistence at going forward cost them as in the dying minutes when Martin Piper felled Baker in the area for Sargent to ram home the penalty, via the under side of the crossbar. The game was well into stoppage time when Matt Cusack's great run saw him brought down but the ball ran for substitute Simon Parnell to steer past the exposed Piper and complete the scoring.

Parkway upset the odds to win trophy

Bodmin Town...0 Plymouth Parkway...2

PARKWAY went into the Peninsula Charity Bowl Final at Launceston as underdogs. But by the end of 90 minutes they had beaten a side that has won the Peninsula League since started two seasons ago.

"We kept our shape and discipline magnificently and we got our rewards from defending from the front and being organised at the back," said a delighted Parkway boss Dave Leonard.

Leonard had just watched his newly-assembled side inflict a first defeat of the season on the reigning league champions, who are expected to be one of the main challengers for the title this season.

The Charity Bowl is a good start for the side as the club are in a rebuilding and transistional period and this display will go a long way to building the belief in the side that Leonard will require.

I thought our fitness was fantastic and for all my players this has been the hardest pre-season that I have had to endure. I will praise them for their magnificent efforts today and the five weeks of hard training from which they benefited," he added.

Mark Berry had the ball in the Parkway net after just two minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside. It was Parkway who were celebrating a minute later when Gavin Cockman made room at the far post to crash his drive off the imposing form of Kevin Miller and inside the near post.

Bodmin, as is to be expected, came back at Parkway but a combination of gritty defending and brave goalkeeping by former Plymstock custodian Ben Elphick kept them at bay.

The second half saw Bodmin throw everything they had at Parkway who shook them to the roots by doubling their lead on 56 minutes.

Huw Morgan brought down Matt Cusack just outside the area and Mark Bonney sent the resulting free-kick over the the far corner of the six yard box where Josh Fenwick rose to loop his header over Miller and inside the far post.

Bodmin surged forward but Elphick saved well from Marshall, Steve Colwell, Smallridge and Berry (twice) as the usually potent Bodmin attack floundered against Parkway's admirable determination.
